Taiwan-based Prime View International (PVI) is supplying the electronic-paper (e-paper) display used in the Kindle an electronic reading device Amazon recently rolled out, according to sources.
The new device from Amazon is the result of a three-year project between PVI and Amazon. With the new product finally ready for the market, PVI expects the market for electrophoretic displays (EPDs) and e-paper devices to further grow, added the sources.
Kindle features a 6-inch EPD from PVI. The display has a resolution of 600×800 at 167ppi and 4-level gray scale. Amazon plans to offer the new reading device starting on November 29 with a price tag of US$399.
PVI is also shipping its EPDs for Sony's Reader and e-Read's STAReBOOK starting last year. Sony unveiled a second edition of its reading device (Reader Digital Book) with a price tag of US$300 at the beginning of October 2007.
In addition to a 4-level gray display, PVI noted that the company now is offering an 8-level gray e-paper product while it plans to roll out 16-gray and color products in 2008.
